Queen of Peace Monastery | Living Peacefully in Harmony with Nature

Queen of Peace is a Christian monastic community in the Upper Squamish Valley of British Columbia, Canada. As nuns of the Order of Preachers, we live a purely contemplative life marked by prayer, manual work and study. Set apart and consecrated to God in silence, we behold the beauty of the Word proclaimed in scripture as well as in creation and contemplate the sacred Mystery. Day by day and moment by moment, we seek to abide in love and to live in peace with God, humanity, and all of creation. We believe our prayer extends beyond our valley to encompass and help sustain the world. The Queen of Peace Monastery located in Squamish, BC, wanted a unique and peaceful film showcasing the Monastery life of prayer, study, and hard work while sharing their environmental care. A key challenge was sharing their story without interviews or voice-overs, preserving the silence central to their routine. To address this, we used subtle sound design to highlight certain moments and carefully edited the film to maintain silence without losing its essence. Creating a timeless film posed another challenge. We chose clips without current logos or details that could date the film. Shana handled the entire process, from concept development to colour choices and final edits. Before starting, she toured the Monastery and spoke with the prioress to shape the concept. The filming took place over three long days, capturing the necessary footage at various times while respecting the nuns' privacy. Additionally, Shana and a team member took photos for the website and recorded hymns during the shoot. The project took 2.5 months to complete.
